We provide representation to  low income and elderly person(s) in civil matters.
Legal Services of Southern Missouri provides representation to the low-income and elderly in civil matters only. Eligibility for legal aid may be based on income and assets of all members of the household and the legal problem.


LSSM provides representation to the low-income and elderly in civil matters only. Eligibility for legal aid may be based on income and assets of all members of the household and the legal problem.

By federal law, LSSM is not allowed to provide assistance to prisoners, handle criminal matters, municipal court matters, personal injury or workers’ compensation cases. LSSM’s legal services are free; however, clients may be responsible for court costs.

LSSM may accept cases in the following areas of law: Domestic/Sexual Violence, Family, Consumer, Housing, Public Benefits, and Elder Law. Each case is decided on its own facts. LSSM may assist in other types of cases not listed on this web site.

LSSM makes every effort to provide services; however, due to limited resources, we can only assist individuals with the most critical legal problems.


How Can I Apply?
You may apply for legal services by contacting LSSM and completing an application either in-person, by telephone or on the internet.

The applicant’s legal problem will be screened for case acceptance. Normally, it takes no more than two weeks to determine if a case will be accepted. The applicant is notified of our decision by mail.

In-person applications will be taken in all offices. You may apply by calling one of the area offices local or toll-free numbers. You should contact the office that services your county of residence.

Further, we recognize that there is a need to provide equal access to the system of justice for low-income individuals who seek redress of grievances. Therefore, it is our mission to provide quality legal representation and advice to low-income persons that ensures equal access to justice in civil matters within the constraints of our financial resources.

Many attorneys that assist low income person(s), charge on a sliding fee schedule. For that reason we have added the latest federal poverty levels below so that you can see how much you may be charged if you use this attorney.
